The Flowers That Bloom in the Spring

It’s that time of year. Our thoughts turn to the warm days of spring and the excitement of planning this year’s garden.  One staple of these gardens is the bulb.  Daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and crocuses promise the end of the long cold winter. Yet, what a history these garden charmers have. They have brought joy to the hearts of winter-weary gardeners since ancient Greece and culinary delight to gourmet chefs. But there’s a darker side to these harbingers of spring — including financial mayhem, political intrigue, and clandestine romantic liaisons.

The Historical Society’s April Brown Bag Lunch presentation will explore the good and the bad of bulbs, including some tips on what to plant and how to get the most out of your spring, summer and fall bulb displays. Meg Algren, the Society’s guest speaker, is a Harford County Master Gardener and former Historical Society Board member. Please join us for this fascinating tale.
