Calling all history buffs, especially those who love delving into the Civil War. You will not want to miss joining the Sgt. Alfred B. Hilton Memorial Fund Committee for their Ninth Annual Memorial Fundraiser. Join us for this free event on Saturday, June 7, 2025, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Historical Society of Harford County Headquarters building on Main Street. Featured speakers include The Honorable William R. Martin, Mayor of Havre de Grace, Mr. Duke Thompson, Abraham Lincoln Reenactor, and Mr. Michael Woods, Civil War Historian. Delve into the precipitating factors for the war and look at where Harford County citizens stood regarding the war. Glance into President Abraham Lincoln’s mindset surrounding the use of Black soldiers and explore how Union General Benjamin Butler planned to utilize these new recruits in the war effort.
This annual event raises funds to support the Committee’s efforts to fund yearly scholarships (administered through Harford Community College) for four deserving students. It helps fund the other programs of the Sgt. Hilton Committee in reaching their mission of Preserving Sgt. Hilton’s memory, establishing a memorial in his honor, educating the public about Harford County’s only native Medal of Honor recipient and highlighting the impact of the nearly 185,000 United States Colored Troops who valiantly fought for the Union during the war. Learn not only about Sgt. Hilton and his family connections here in Harford County, but how you can help in our efforts to locate and appropriately identify the final resting places of USCT soldiers buried throughout Harford County. Donations are welcomed, and sponsorships are highly encouraged. We hope to see you at this wonderful event. Be sure to mark your calendars and preregister now on the HSHC website to join us for this exciting afternoon of learning. Seating is limited and must be reserved.
